CHP spark plugs: up to +67% service life from a bench-top machine

How scheduled ultrasonic recovery on an MSX30 stretched $8,000 plug sets from 6,000 to 10,000 hours in biogas CHP service.

Biogas CHP spark plug sets cost thousands of dollars and foul on schedule — the impurities in biogas see to that. This application study documents how ultrasonic recovery on a bench-top MSX30 extended plug service life from 6,000 to 8,000–10,000 hours and paid for the machine inside a year.

The contamination

Combustion deposits

Biogas is not a clean fuel: lean-burn combustion leaves progressive deposits on electrodes and pre-chamber passages that degrade ignition quality, output and emissions.

Siloxane and mineral ash

Trace siloxanes in digester and landfill gas burn to abrasive glassy ash — the deposit that ends plug life early and resists every workshop brush.

The geometry problem

Pre-chamber plugs foul inside the chamber and its transfer bores — exactly where no mechanical cleaning reaches and where cavitation works at full strength.

The results

Service life up to +67%. Plug sets that previously retired at 6,000 hours now run 8,000–10,000 hours with scheduled ultrasonic recovery.
Machine payback under 12 months. Against spark plug sets costing $8,000+ per engine, the MSX30 recovered its price within the first year.
Ignition quality maintained. Recovered plugs restore combustion stability, output and emissions behaviour between replacements.
A maintenance routine, not a rescue. Recovery is scheduled into service intervals — plugs are cleaned on rotation, not when the engine complains.

The arithmetic sells itself. One plug set per engine per year not purchased pays for the machine; every set after that is margin. The same recovery logic applies to injectors, valves and pre-combustion hardware across a gas-engine fleet.

FAQ

Questions about this process

What fouls biogas CHP spark plugs?
Combustion deposits from lean-burn running and siloxane ash, which burns to a glassy abrasive deposit inside the pre-chamber and transfer bores where no brush reaches.
What did ultrasonic recovery do to plug life?
Service life went from 6,000 hours to 8,000 to 10,000 hours, up to 67 percent more, on plug sets that cost thousands of dollars.
What machine does it need?
A bench-top MSX 30 with a plug-safe aqueous detergent, a rinse and a dry, with gap and resistance checked before the plugs go back. The machine paid for itself inside a year.
